John Hannah has nearly two decades of experience at the highest levels of US foreign policy. He has served in senior positions in both Republican and Democratic administrations. From 2005-2009, Mr. Hannah was Vice President Cheney’s top foreign policy advisor and headed his Office of National Security Affairs. In President Bush’s first term, he served as the Vice President’s Deputy National Security Advisor for Middle East Affairs.
During the presidency of William J. Clinton, Mr. Hannah was a Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Warren Christopher, focused on the Middle East, the Balkans, and Russia and the former Soviet states. He also served in the administration of George H.W. Bush as a member of Secretary of State James A. Baker’s Policy Planning Staff, where he worked extensively on the collapse of the former Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact, as well as the first Gulf War and its aftermath.
Outside of government, Mr. Hannah had a law practice focused on international dispute resolution. He also served as Deputy Director at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Mr. Hannah currently is a Senior Fellow at The Foundation for Defense of Democracies, where he writes and speaks on US foreign policy. His articles have been published in The New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal, and he blogs regularly at ForeignPolicy.com. Mr. Hannah is a graduate of the Yale Law School and Duke University.
